Geometric Topology
In the area of geometric topology, we mainly deal with low-dimensional manifolds. Usually low dimension means dimension three or less. 3-dimensional manifold is also closely related to knot theory.
A knot is an embeddd image of a circle in the 3-sphere and a link is an
embedded image of a disjoint union of circles in the 3-sphere. In knot theory,
we study invariants and various properties of knots and try to
classify knots. In the following site, you can see a table of invariants of knots, maintained by Charles Livingston of Indiana Univ. and
Jae Choon Cha of Postech.

Heegaard splitting
Heegaard splitting is a decomposition of a 3-manifold into handlebodies or compression bodies. "Heegaard" is a name of mathematician who first considered decomposition of 3-manifold. For more information, refer to the following site.

And Heegaard theory is actively studied by many researchers. Recently there was a workshop on Heegaard splittings of 3-manifolds.
